Merzouga is about 560 kilometres from Marrakech, around nine to ten hours of driving without stops. The road crosses the High Atlas, then runs east through the valleys of southern Morocco to the dunes of Erg Chebbi. It is too long to enjoy in a single day, so we always split it over two days, with a night in the Dadès Valley or the Todra Gorge. Done that way, the drive becomes one of the highlights of a Morocco trip rather than something to endure.
The route, stage by stage
Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou (about 3.5 to 4 hours)
Leaving Marrakech, the N9 climbs into the High Atlas through Berber villages and walnut groves to the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres the highest major road pass in the country. On the other side lies Aït Benhaddou, a fortified village of earth and straw on the old caravan route, listed by UNESCO. It is the natural lunch stop.

Ouarzazate, Skoura and the Dadès Valley (about 3 hours)
Past Ouarzazate, the gateway to the south, the road follows the so-called road of a thousand kasbahs: the palm oasis of Skoura, the rose valley of Kelaat M’Gouna, famous for its rose festival in May, and finally the Dadès Valley, with its red cliffs and rounded rock formations. This is where we usually spend the first night.
Todra Gorge to Merzouga (about 4 hours)
The next morning, a short detour leads into the Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls rise straight up on both sides. The road then continues through Tinghir, Erfoud and Rissani before the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. You arrive in the afternoon, in time to ride to camp for sunset.

How many days do you need?
| Trip length | What it looks like | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| 2 days | Marrakech to Merzouga and straight back | Not recommended: around 18 hours of driving for one night |
| 3 days | Marrakech, Dadès, desert night, long drive back | Possible, but the last day is very long |
| 4 days | Marrakech, Dadès, two nights in the desert, return via a different route | Comfortable and well paced |
| One way to Fes | Marrakech, Dadès, desert, then Fes | The best option if Fes is on your list |
If you are flying home or onwards from Fes, do not drive back to Marrakech. Merzouga to Fes is around 470 km through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas, a different and beautiful road.
Our advice
Ways to travel from Marrakech to Merzouga
Private driver-guide
The most comfortable way, and the one we specialise in. You choose your stops, start when you like, and your driver handles mountain roads, fuel and parking while explaining the landscape and culture along the way. It also lets you stay in better places than the stops fixed by group tours.
Shared group tour
Three-day group tours from Marrakech are cheap and easy to book, but they usually travel in full minibuses with fixed stops, and the camps are often large and busy. Good if your budget is tight, less so if you want time to linger.
Self-drive
Renting a car is possible, and the roads are paved all the way to Merzouga. Plan on slow traffic through towns, police checkpoints, and avoid driving after dark, when unlit vehicles and animals make rural roads risky. You will still need a camp transfer into the dunes.
Bus or plane
Long-distance coaches link Marrakech with the south, usually overnight; check current timetables, as routes change. There are also small airports at Errachidia and Ouarzazate, but flights are limited and you still need road transport to Merzouga.
What to bring for the drive and the night
- Layers: the High Atlas pass can be cold even when Marrakech is warm, and desert nights are cool from October to April.
- A scarf or chèche for sun and wind on the dunes.
- A small overnight bag for the camp, so your main luggage can stay in the car.
- Cash in dirhams for small purchases, tips and roadside stops.
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle.
