The idea
Essaouira, the Atlantic and a gentler Marrakech
Essaouira is the counterweight to everything people expect from Morocco: a whitewashed port town with Atlantic light, Gnaoua music in the evenings and a medina you can cross in fifteen minutes. Paired with two nights in Marrakech, it makes a first visit that never once feels like hard work.
Journey highlights
Three nights inside the Essaouira ramparts, a minute from the fish grills
A morning on the water with a working fisherman, weather permitting
A women argan cooperative in the Haha country, visited properly rather than as a shop stop
Two nights in Marrakech to finish, with a guide for as much or as little as you want
Day by day
The route
Scroll the days and the route draws itself. Every element here is movable – this is how the journey runs if you change nothing.
Route
Day 01
Arrival in Essaouira
Collected from Essaouira or Marrakech airport and driven straight to the coast. Check in, then nothing planned at all – the ramparts at sunset are the only recommendation we will make on your first evening.
Night 1: Riad inside the Essaouira ramparts
Day 02
The port and the medina
The fish auction at eight, which is chaos and worth it, then a slow walk through the woodworkers arcades where thuya burl has been carved for three hundred years. Lunch is grilled sardines at the port, eaten standing up.
Night 2: Riad inside the Essaouira ramparts
Day 03
Atlantic day
Yours. Horses or quads on the long beach south of town, a kitesurf lesson in the afternoon wind, or a hammam and a book. We will have booked whichever you tell us, and cancelled whichever you do not.
Night 3: Riad inside the Essaouira ramparts
Day 04
Argan country to Marrakech
Inland through the Haha hills, stopping at a women cooperative where the argan is still cracked by hand, then on to Marrakech. Arrive mid-afternoon with the evening free.
Night 4: Riad in the Medina, Marrakech
Day 05
Marrakech
A half day with a private guide covering the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace and the parts of the souk worth your time, then the afternoon free. Dinner on a rooftop with the Koutoubia lit up in front of you.
Night 5: Riad in the Medina, Marrakech
Day 06
Departure
A late breakfast, a last hour in the courtyard, and a private transfer to Menara whenever your flight requires it.
Where you stay
Rooms we have slept in ourselves
We inspect every property we book and re-inspect it each year. When a place slips, we stop using it – which is why this list is shorter than our competitors.
The detail
What is included, and what is not
We would rather be clear about this up front than surprise you later. If something here does not suit, say so – nearly all of it can be changed.
What is included
Five nights accommodation in riads inside the walls of both towns
Private vehicle and driver for all transfers and the Haha route
Licensed private guides in Essaouira and Marrakech
All breakfasts, two lunches and three dinners
Cooperative visit arranged directly with the women who run it
A local contact reachable at any hour of your journey
What is not included
International flights and visa costs where applicable
Travel insurance, which we ask every traveller to hold

Pace and fitness
The gentlest of our journeys – no day involves more than two hours walking
One driving day of about three hours, broken by the cooperative stop
Both medinas are flat and compact; Essaouira is almost entirely step-free
Suitable for multi-generational groups, and often booked as one
