The red city

Marrakech

Marrakech rewards people who slow down in it. The Medina is a working city before it is anything else, and the difference between a good day and a frustrating one is usually a matter of timing and the person walking beside you.

The character of the place

What Marrakech is actually like

The city was founded in 1070 as a caravan stop and has never entirely stopped behaving like one. Inside the walls, the souks are still organised by trade – dyers in one lane, slipper makers in the next, blacksmiths where the noise will bother nobody. Learn that logic and the Medina stops being a maze.

Outside the walls, Gueliz is a different city altogether: wide streets, concept stores, and restaurants where Marrakchis actually eat. Most of our travellers end up spending an evening there, usually by accident, and are glad they did.

When to go

Season by season

The honest version, including the months we would steer you away from.

The best of it. Warm days, cool evenings, the Atlas still holding snow behind the city.

Hot – regularly above 40C. Workable if your riad has a pool and you treat the middle of the day as indoor time.

A second spring. October is arguably the single best month in the city.

Bright, cold nights, and the lowest rates of the year. Pack more than you think.

What we would do

Worth your time in Marrakech

The dyers souk before nine, while the morning wool is still dripping

Le Jardin Secret, which almost nobody visits, rather than the Majorelle queue

The Saadian Tombs early, the Bahia Palace late

Dinner in Gueliz on at least one night, for the contrast

Where to stay

The kinds of places we book

Riads in the Medina

Six to eight rooms around a courtyard. The best of them are silent at night, which in a city this dense is the real luxury.

Palmeraie estates

Twenty minutes out, with space and a pool. Right for families, wrong if you want to walk to dinner.
