High Atlas
An hour from Marrakech the air changes. The High Atlas runs for 700 kilometres and holds North Africa highest peak, but what stays with people is smaller: walnut trees, irrigation channels, and the pace of a valley that has never needed to hurry.
The character of the place
What High Atlas is actually like
These are Amazigh valleys, with their own languages, their own agricultural calendar and a collective approach to water that predates every government Morocco has had. Visiting well means walking between villages rather than driving to one, and accepting hospitality when it is offered.
The Ait Bouguemez is the valley we return to most: flat-floored, green, ringed by peaks, and still reached by a road that takes effort. The Toubkal massif is closer to Marrakech and more dramatic, but you will share it.
When to go
Season by season
The honest version, including the months we would steer you away from.
April to June
Snowmelt, wildflowers and full irrigation channels. The best walking of the year.
July and August
Hot in the valleys but far cooler than the cities. Moroccan families holiday here, which is part of the appeal.
September to October
Walnut and apple harvest. Clear, settled weather and the warmest welcomes.
November to March
Snow above 2,000m. Some passes close; the valleys stay beautiful and very cold.
What we would do
Worth your time in High Atlas
Our picks
Walking village to village in the Ait Bouguemez, with lunch wherever you reach at one
The collective granary at Sidi Moussa, six hundred years old and still in use
The Tizi n Tichka pass, which is a destination rather than a transfer
Staying in a family gite rather than a hotel, at least for one night
Where to stay
The kinds of places we book
Family gites
Simple, warm, often shared bathrooms. The single best way to understand the valley.
Mountain lodges
A handful of properly comfortable lodges with private bathrooms and real heating.
